Paul Downs Custom Conference Tables reports business is increasing significantly at the Bridgeport, PA firm. Owner Paul Downs says he wrote 157 proposals for the six months ended June 30, up 267% for the same period in 2009. He says March was his best month of the year, with $213,000 in sales.

Downs recounts his company's progress online, blogging regularly at the nytimes.com/boss site, which today republished his blog in a feature about his firm in the small business report in the New York Times. His blog shows operations around the plant, including him standing in from of his ThermWood CNC router. Downs says he moved a cabinetmaker into the office to help him keep up with the requests for bids.

Downs began his business specializing in custom-made furniture in 1986, in a small shop in Manayunk, PA. Over the years the firm outgrew four locations, and is now operating in a 33,000 square foot shop in Bridgeport, PA. "Half our work is office furniture and the other half is residential," Downs says at his woodworking company's site, which has a section specifically dedicated to conference table work. He has noted a surge in requests from domestic manufacturers since the spring.
