Merillat to Close Adrian Manufacturing Facility
ADRIAN, MI – Masco Builder Cabinet Group, which acquired Merillat through a merger, announced it will close Merillat’s original manufacturing facility next year, according to The Daily Telegram. The closure is set to occur in the second quarter of 2009 and will eliminate 330 full-time jobs.

“It’s a sad day for us. A lot of family and friends are affected,” said Karen Strauss, president of Masco Builder Cabinet Group. “The plant’s meant a lot to us. It’s no reflection on the caliber of workers or their work. We simply cannot afford the infrastructure with the economy the way it is.”

Strauss said no closure is planned for the corporate office of Masco Builder Cabinet Group, which also is located in Adrian and employs 287 people .

Adrian’s production work of Merillat brand cabinets will be moved during the upcoming months to two other Masco Builder Cabinet Group plants in Culpepper, VA, and Mount Sterling, KY.

All current employees at Adrian’s plant will be offered a severance package, according to Masco Builder Cabinet Group Communications Manager Susan Cross. Each worker’s package will be based on years of service and level of employment. Company officials also announced its human relations department will work on a case-by-case basis with employees who wish to relocate to one of the company’s 12 other plants.
