RESTON, VA -- Canyon Creek Cabinet Co. of Monroe, WA, and HomeCrest Cabinetry of Goshen, IN, a division of MasterBrand Cabinets Inc., are the first two cabinet manufacturers to meet the certification requirements of the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Assn.'s new Environmental Stewardship Program and the first to be ESP licensed.

The KCMA reported that 18 other applications were received as of mid-November. All were being evaluated and could be licensed by the end of the month.

"We are off to a great start with the ESP," said Bill Weaver, president of the KCMA and of Canyon Creek Cabinet Co. Participants include large and small companies, custom and stock manufacturers…We expect the number of participants to grow.

The KCMA developed the ESP to enable cabinet manufacturers to demonstrate their ongoing commitment to sound environmental practices and sustainable manufacturing. In order to qualify, ESP participants must accumulate points in the areas of air quality, product resource management, process resource management, environmental stewardship and community relations.

Dick Titus, executive vice president of the KCMA, said, "It is possible that nearly half of the cabinetry marketed in the U.S. could be certified under the ESP by the end of the year." For more information, visit
