Joseph E. Callender, co-founder of wood component manufacturer Northway Industries Inc., died Feb. 25 following an extended illness. Callender co-founded Northway in 1966 along with C. Kenneth Battram, as an alternative source for obtaining countertops and supplying them to Battram Co. Inc., a retail kitchen dealer and manufacturers’ representative for Wood-Mode Fine Custom Cabinetry.

Callender served Northway first as plant manager, later as executive vice president and finally secretary/treasurer of the Board. He also held the positions of executive vice president and secretary of the Board at Battram Co. from 1973 to 1995.

He is survived by his wife, two daughters, a son, two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two sisters.
