PARKERSBURG, WV

— An ornate pearwood jewelry box by Glendale, CA, artist Nairi Safaryan won first prize in a Carving Artistry Contest sponsored by Woodcraft and Pfeil. He will receive a 4-day/3-night trip for two to Brienz, Switzerland, and private carving lessons with master carver Paul Fuchs at the Kantonale Schnitzlerschule Brienz woodcarving school.

Second place went to Roger Strautman from Woodburn, IN, for “The Shroud,” a chip-carved cross with carved wooden linen. Strautman wins a Pfeil “Swiss Made” Brienz Collection boxed carving set.

“We were overwhelmed by the quantity and quality of the submissions we received for this contest,” said Jeff Forbes, president of Woodcraft Supply LLC. “This effort truly confirms that world-class woodworking is being conducted in home workshops all across America.”
