ATLANTA — How to convert to more environmentally friendly finishes and technologies, while staying productive and profitable is the underlying theme of a one-day seminar, scheduled the day before the start of the International Woodworking Machinery & Furniture Supply Fair-USA.

“Industrial Wood Finishing Symposium: From Green to Lean and in Between,” will be held Aug. 19 at the Georgia World Congress Center, home of IWF 2008. The technical program is cosponsored by IWF, Wood & Wood Products and the Centre for Advanced Wood Processing at the University of British Columbia. Becker Acroma, a supplier of industrial water-based wood finishes based in Brantford, ON, has signed on as a major sponsor of the symposium.

The program will kick off with a keynote presentation by Carl Smith, president of the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute, a non-profit organization that oversees the GREENGUARD Certification Program. GEI establishes acceptable indoor air standards for indoor products, environments and buildings with the goal of improving public health and quality of life.  Wood finishes, laminates, and office and school furniture are among products that GEI certifies.

The program will also include case studies detailing the best practices of several North American wood products companies, including:

•         Steelcase of Grand Rapids, MI, the world’s largest manufacturer of office furniture;

•         Rosati Specialties of Clinton, MI, a company specializing in finishing architectural woodwork;

•         Leda Furniture of Toronto, ON, a manufacturer of residential and contract furniture; and

•         M and J Woodcrafts of Delta, BC, a manufacturer of cabinet doors.
