Huttig to Close Virginia Facility

ST. LOUIS — Huttig Building Products, a national distributor of millwork and building products, on Aug. 30 announced that it is closing its Fredericksburg, VA, facility, leading to a loss of about 27 local jobs, according to The Free-Lance Star.

About 85% of Huttig’s business is dependent on new residential construction, and Kenneth Young, treasurer, said that the market is the weakest it has been in 15 to 20 years. The company has seen some uptick in business from remodeling, but not enough to make up the difference.

Employees at the Fredericksburg office were told of the company’s decision this week, Young said. Customers who had been serviced from the Fredericksburg branch will now work with Huttig’s facilities in Lancaster, PA, and Rocky Mount, NC.

Young said a couple of the local Huttig employees will relocate to other positions within the company. The Fredericksburg office will be gradually phased out and is expected to close completely by mid-October.
