Eliason Corp. Doubling One Plant, Closing Two

PORTAGE, MI — Door manufacturer Eliason Corp. is nearly doubling the size of its Portage, MI, plant, but the company is closing two other plants in the process and consolidating those operations in Portage, according to the Kalamazoo Gazette.

Eliason President John Steffen said the move is necessary to lower costs and remain competitive in a tough economy. “We’re suffering along with everyone else,” Steffen said. “We are expanding here in Portage — not because of immediate growth, but because of efficiency.”

The 50,625-square-foot addition will bring the plant’s total size to more than 107,000 square feet. The consolidation of plants in Hartford and Lawrence will not result in a loss of total jobs for the company, Steffen said. Eliason will bring 20 workers to Portage for a total work force of 97.
