Dorel to Curtail Manufacturing Operations at Michigan RTA Plant

MONTREAL – Dorel Industries Inc. announced May 17 that it will suspend the majority of manufacturing operations at the Ameriwood RTA furniture factory in Dowagiac, MI, as of mid July. The action will result in the layoff of approximately 170 of the 215 workers employed there.

Martin Schwartz, president and CEO of Dorel, said, “While we remain convinced that there will be sustained demand for domestically manufactured RTA furniture, we have concluded that with the improvements made to date, our manufacturing footprint exceeds anticipated market needs.”

Schwartz said results of the company’s re-oriented supply chain, utilizing sources in North American and China, has been encouraging. He added that the company’s RTA furniture production facilities are operating at high efficiency levels and can accommodate more business.
