VANCOUVER, BC -- Conifex Timber Inc. (TSX VENTURE:CFF) says it launched a $45 million bioenergy generation project at its Mackenzie sawmill site, with commercial production of electricity expected in the summer of 2012.
Conifex says it will spend $10.5 million on a 36 MW steam turbine, to be powered by wood waste and sawdust from its McKenzie sawmill, generating 230 GWh of net energy per year. Conifex's sawmilling operations will in turn be powered by the bioenergy plant, with potential for selling excess power to BC Hydro, a local electric utility. The extraction of the turbine has been sized to accommodate lumber drying requirements at the Mackenzie sawmill operations.
