Coffman Stairs Announces Lay Offs

MARION, VA — Coffman Stairs LLC, a manufacturer of stair parts, on Jan 8 announced the lay-off of approximately 25 employees, according to SWVA Today. The company also plans lay-off of an additional 23 employees in February based on changes in its raw materials sourcing. As of December, 2008, Coffman Stairs employed approximately 170 people.

“While letting people go is never desirable, the current and planned reductions are part of the normal course of business and the result of a tough economy,” said Bill Smith, president and CEO of Visador Holding Corp., owner of Coffman Stairs. “We are managing costs across our business and doing what we need to do to remain a viable business and employer in Smyth County, Virginia.”
