MADRAS, OR -- Bright Wood Corp., a secondary lumber remanufacturer of window and door components, casings and other millwork products, laid off about 140 workers at its Madras and Redmond, OR, plants Feb. 8, according to KTVZ.com. The layoffs were the first in the company's 47-year history and represent about 10% of the company's 1,450-person workforce in central Oregon, which ranked them as the third-largest private employer in the region last year. Various elements contributed to the layoffs, including the cooling real estate market, which also has hit Bright Wood's Otautau, New Zealand mill with cuts to its workforce of 35 to 40 jobs this week, Dallas Stovall, president and CEO, said.
