BMHC to Discontinue AZ Framing and Concrete Operations

SAN FRANCISCO — Building Materials Holding Corp. a provider of building materials and construction services to professional residential builders and contractors, on May 14 announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary SelectBuild Arizona will discontinue its residential framing and concrete operations in Tucson, AZ, on July 18, according to Modern Distribution Management.

“The difficult decision to discontinue our residential framing and concrete operations in Tucson is a necessity based on today’s challenging business environment and weakness in the Tucson housing market,” said President Stanley M. Wilson. “Housing permits in the Tucson market have fallen sharply from 1,349 in the first quarter of 2007 to only 738 in the first quarter of 2008. Tucson has been hit particularly hard by the downturn in the housing market, and we have to realign our operations accordingly.”

The discontinuation affects 180 employees. SelectBuild Arizona will complete all pending contracts during the 60-day period and will provide ongoing service for prior contracts from its Phoenix operations. SelectBuild Arizona will continue its framing and concrete operations in Phoenix.
