AWFS Fair: adding value to wood

LAS VEGAS

- AWFS Fair exhibitors are blending woodworking technologies, cross-pollinating software, hardware, machinery, wood and coatings to develop new types of offerings. Inventive solutions range from portable power tools to CNC routers, to the newest iterations of application software, allow more efficient production.

Woodworkers are able to squeeze every bit of material from updated nesting software applications, for example, that intelligently calculate then execute cuts to minimize wood waste.

Sigmatek Systems (Booth 4861), for example, is showing its SigmaNEST for Router software that produces nests while also optimizeing part results with grain constraint management. It imports files from solid CAD programs, automatically recognizing 3D models with partial z-depth. It also features advanced NC logic, spiralling cuts progressively inward for vacuum  hold-down efficiency.

EnRoute Software  (Booth 1013) features an updated Version 5 that includes advanced nesting, and remnant creation, identifying sheet remnants as separate contours, then cutting parts from every nook and cranny on subsequent jobs.

Enroute says its enhanced Rapid Texture 3D surfacing application in versions Plus 5 and Pro 5 overlays bitmap images onto project design files, and calculates cutting paths based on the bit being used for rapid contour cutting to create stunning effects, shown here.

A new generation of greener stains and coatings with improved performance is on hand at AWFS Fair, including new waterborne offerings at Valspar, ML Campbell and Becker Acroma, among others, as well as a new formaldehyde-free Sherwood F3 Kemvar varnish from at Sherwin Williams.

Becker Acroma (Booth 1413) is featuring its Aqualight Clear Waterborne UV, based on a monomer-free combination of UV and water-based chemistry; as well as its waterborne stain offerings, available in both spray and wiping stain.

Valspar (Booth 2045) is featuring its Zenith waterborne lacquer, a third-generation waterborne coating intended for finishing fine residential furniture, millwork, moldings, interior doors, and picture frames. Formulated with proprietary resin technology that Valspar says is superior in durability to conventional nitrocellulose finishes. It uses a low VOC, HAPS-free formulation that contains no isocyanate or formaldehyde.
