Vaughan Furniture Closing; Former Manufacturing Giant Shuts Down

One-time furniture manufacturing giant Vaughan Furniture, Galax, VA, will close operations. The company, which at it peak employed 1,800 in five factory sites, now wholesales furniture and has just a handful of workers.

Vaughan Furniture Co.told employees in an internal memo it will close down in 2015 after 91 years in business, laying off its last 24 workers in Virginia, North Carolina and Nevada, reports the Richmond Times-Dispatch. It hasn't manufactured since 2008.

In a memo to employees, the private Galax-based company said it would cease operations in the upcoming months, citing weak sales. It showrooms in Las Vegas and High Point, NC will be closed as well. Vaughan Furniture opened a 260,000-square-foot factory near Galax in 1998 as it turned 75.
