WYOMING, MI - U.S. furniture manufacturers are making headway on recovery, with plants reopening and domestic sales improving.

Now, in a hopeful twist, residential wood furnishings maker Kindel Furniture Co., located in Grand Rapids, is producing very high end products that have met with export succcess —  to the Middle East and China.

Kindel Furniture's Amy Wolbert told the Grand Rapids Press Kindel has shipped 52 pieces to Beijing's Home Boutique store, including hand-carved items and a hand-painted liquor cabinet. Prices range from around $3,000 to more than $40,000.

"We believe this is a testament to Grand Rapids craftsmanship and superior execution," Wolbert told the paper, which reports that Kindel Furniture has also shipped to Shanghai, Kuwait, Egypt and Lebanon.

Kindel Furniture merged with The Taylor Co. and its subsidiaries back in 2010. According to the company, it is the last of Grand Rapids' domestic furniture manufacturers, part of the town's storied heritage.
