SierraPine Closes Springfield Particleboard MillSPRINGFIELD, OR - SierraPine will close its particleboard mill in Springfield, OR, resulting in job losses for approximately 90 people, according to The Register-Guard.

The news comes less than a month after Flakeboard America announced it would buy the Roseville, CA-based SierraPine's western U.S. panel assets, which included the Ampine and Springfield particleboard plants located in California and Oregon, and the Medite MDF plant in Oregon.

The purchase by Flakeboard, announced January 14, is projected to close the first quarter of 2014. Flakeboard is a subsidiary of Arauco.

SierraPine President Jeff Johnson told The Register-Guard that the plant's closure is due in part to an overabundance in the marketplace of particleboard with characteristics similar to that produced at Springfield. The composite panel is used in the manufacture of products such as furniture, cabinetry and casegoods.

In January, SierraPine announced it would permanently close the particleboard facility in Adel, GA.
