Whirlwind's latest patent effort for flesh sensing table saw safety devices was among the week's top reports.
Most viewed, however, was an article and video of Saturn Design Woodworking's dramatic rotating veneered table. The spinning, walking expanding table, captured in an artful video by its maker, Robert Huskey of Seattle-based Saturn Design, is quite dramatic. Reminiscent of a capstan table that rotates and expands and is also presented in WoodworkingNetwork videos, Huskey explains that his design - for which he is seeking patents - is different.
Huskey's table is composed of up to 24 leaves (plus a round Terminus for open shapes) that can be set on each other within a 30 degree range of arc.
"The capstan table has intrigued me for a long time," Huskey says. "The precursor to it was called the Jupe table but that didn’t have the automatic storage and raising of the leaves. It was in response to those tables that I started the design of the Phoebe Table.
"The Jupe has two different shapes; the Capstan has three counting the center. My original goal was to see if an expandable circular table could be made with a single geometric element. The crescent is the most elegant solution to that question if you allow for an opening in the center of the table.
"The hardware and approach for my table is different so I’m not at all worried about the capstan patents," Kuskey notes.
