Wood technology at trade shows were most viewed reports this week: a stronger, thinner lightweight panel technology, a new panel laminator at IKEA Poland, both to be seen at Germany's Ligna in May; and a powerful hand-held automated tenon joiner at Cabinets & Closets Expo next week at the New Jersey Convention Center.

The automated tenon joiner, a Domino from Festool, will be demonstrated live at the Eveready Hardware booth by Corbin Clay, custom furniture builder and owner of Azure Furniture in Denver. Clay will explain the business model of Azure, its reliance on beetle-killed pine and the tenon joining system. He'll also touch on the strength of wooden tenons versus other joining methods such as dowels, dados and biscuit joiners. Clay speaks Thurs., Feb. 28, and Friday, March 1 at 11 am, and 1 pm.

Also leading the wood industry news this week: Austria's Klausner Group announced plans to build two and possibly a third giant sawmill in the U.S. Each of the timber firm's sawmills would be triple the size of any other existing U.S. sawmill, says one observer. The company also delivers wood waste from its xisting plants for biofuel, in growing demand, especially in Europe.
