BERLIN - Wood manufacturing and lumber industry publishing executives were given an exclusive preview today of the 2013 LIGNA. The biennial global trade show will be held in Hannover, Germany May 6-10.

“The world’s leading suppliers of plant, machinery and equipment for the forest and timber industries regard LIGNA as the ultimate benchmark event – the fair where new products are launched and new trends are set," said Dr. Jochen Köckler, member of Deutsche Messe AG’s Managing Board which operates the show. "They can expect to find an innovations showcase that is without parallel anywhere in the world.”

Dr. Köckler said there will be around 1,700 exhibitors from 50 countries, and 90,000 attendees from 90 countries are anticipated.

LIGNA 2013 will put the spotlight on key global megatrends, including:
• sustainable, intelligent production
• highly customizable manufacturing systems
• flexibility-enhancing industrial solutions

Standalone displays for key segment innovation drivers will be established at LIGNA for surface technology, lightweight panel construction, and new this time, wood-based bioenergy systems and window production technology.

Wolfgang Pöschl, chair of equipment manufacturer Weinig AG and also chair of the European equipment manufacturers group VDMA, said his organization will promote "sustainability with wood as the preferred material for furniture." Pöschl says VDMA manufacturers see markets in Eastern Europe, China, Russia, Belarus and eventually North America.

Mr. Bernd Bielefeldt of Dieffenbacher machine Sales Director Pellet Plants also discussed the trending markets in pellet production and bioenergy.

Professor Dr. Ing. Bohumil Kasal from the Fraunhofer Institute of Wood Research discussed the possibilities and benefits of using wood. His research focuses on new technologies to develop chemicals from wood. Wood production plants need to be smaller and more efficient, Professor Dr. Ing. Bohumil Kasal) said, and built close to the end users to be more affordable. Technologies need to be developed for small to medium size companies to use raw material waste and to slow rapid deforestation.

Bernhard Dirr-managing director of VDMA and developer of Ligna TV said this year Ligna will be interviewing exhibitors and attendees on the show floor and streaming live video, and also deliver video reports on demand.

In our next LIGNA preview report, exhibitors Leuco, Weinig, Homag, Leitz, Sennebogen, BASF, Dieffenbacher, Mafell, wood-mizer, Biesse, Landesbetrieb Wald + Holz. Kiesel, microtech, grecon, Hubtex, DSH and SCM will preview their exhibit plans.
