Ex-Bassett Superior Plant Fire Ruled AccidentalHENRY COUNTY, VA — Accidental fire is the ruling made for the blaze that destroyed the former Bassett Superior Lines furniture plant late last month. According to a report in the Martinsville Bulletin, Henry County Fire Marshal Rodney Howell said a cutting torch used during the 230,000-square-foot building’s demolition likely caused the March 29 fire.

The plant had been used to manufacture residential furniture components prior to its closure in 2007. The damage estimate of $260,000-$270,000 includes equipment from the Dishman Construction demolition company, as well as paint booths and wood flooring and columns that were to have been sold or salvaged.
