HENRY COUNTY, VA - The former Bassett Furniture Superior Line plant, undergoing demolition, was destroyed in a fire that started early last Thursday evening.
The intense heat of the smoldering rubble prevented fire officials from concluding their investigation.
Damage was estimated at $270,000, mainly related to paint booths and wood flooring and columns in the building that closed in 2007, according to the Martinsville Bulletin. The paint booths reportedly had been sold to a Delaware company and the wood was going to be salvaged for reuse. Equipment owned by Dishman Construction Co., which was managing the demolition, also was destroyed in the blaze.
