SOUTH CHARLESTON, WV - Evans Lumber Company is calling it quits after 82 years in business.
The company said it is succumbing to the pressure of competing with home improvement chains such as Home Depot and Lowe's.
Don Evans, third generation owner, told The Charleston Gazette, "it's time to do what his father ... never wanted to do."
The company began a liquidation sale in February and said whatever is not sold will be donated to charity.
According to its website, Evans Lumber was founded as South Charleston Lumber in November 1929 with $500 invested in stock. Three of the four original investors quickly dropped out leaving W.A. "Gus" Evans as the lone owner. He officially changed the company's name to Evans Lumber Company in 1940.
