BEAUFORT, NC - An Oct. 27 wood chip silo fire and explosion at Atlantic Veneer Corporation remains under investigation.
The Sunday morning explosion ripped off the silo's roof. A second wood chip silo and a wood chip conveyor were also damaged by fire, according to WNCT 9. A firefighter, responding to the scene, was treated for minor burns.
The North Carolina Bureau of Investigations, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and other agencies are assisting the Beaufort Fire Department in the investigation to determine what triggered the fire. WNCT 9 reported that Atlantic Veneer has experienced several fires over the years, including one that triggered an explosion in 2005 that sent four firemen to the hospital for burn treatment.
Atlantic Veneer specializes in veneer slicing. It is a sister company of Veneer Technologies Inc., a manufacturer of decorative wood veneer products.
