AWFS' Nancy Fister Education Person of the YearLOS ANGELES -  Nancy Fister, director of education for the Association of Woodworking & Furnishings Suppliers, was named 2012 Person of the Year by the Los Angeles County Industrial and Technology Education Association.

Fister, who also coordinates education for the AWFS Fair wood industry show, was cited for her efforts towards industry education and career and technical education advocacy.

Fister has been at AWFS 10 years, during which time she has grown the popular College of Woodworking Knowledge educational program at the AWFS Fair. "These seminars would not be well received and attended without her vision and hard work,” says AWFS board member Phil Martin.

Fister studied and received her LEED certification in order to expand her knowledge of sustainable practice topics and she continually adds new seminars and tracks for specific groups like woodworking educators and small shops with less than ten employees.

Outside AWFS, Fister developed the WoodIndustryEd.org educational database resource website and oversees the growth of the Fresh Wood student competition and the AWFS scholarship programs. She serves on committees and advisory groups such as Cerritos College and works with  WoodLINKS, Woodwork Career Alliance and SkillsUSA in the efforts to align skill standards.
