127 Merillat employees sue for severance

RAPID CITY, SD – Workers formerly employed by Merillat at a particleboard plant are suing the parent company.

According to the Associated Press, the suit was filed on the behalf of 127 employees who allege Masco Builder Cabinet Group broke a contract involving a severance package. Masco has about 30 days to respond.

The plant was on the verge of closing before being sold last week to Dakota Panel of Eau Claire, WI. The employees say they were promised earlier, both verbally and in a written memo, that they would get one week’s pay for every year with Merillat.

Most of the former Merillat employees involved in the lawsuit were offered jobs by Dakota Panel but were advised by their attorney to not take new jobs at this time.
