The furniture items, such as tables and chairs, are built of wood with metal frames, which are contoured to be easy to clean if a bed bug infestation is detected. Big-city bed bug infestations have been rising in recent years.
Central City Bed, a business developed to produce and sell the furniture, is the assignee holding the patent for the "Bedbug Infestation-Resistant Bed" frame (twin, full and queen sizes). Patent US 8,739,333 was filed on April 5, 2010 and granted on June 3, 2014.
"If you can't afford to throw away infested furniture, you really need pieces that help you spot bed bugs early and that can be successfully treated and re-used," says Jon Bailey, who eradicates infestations for the non-profit housing agency.
Central City first go into the busines in 2010, as it raced to furnish a 176-unit affordable housing building in Portland, OR. The organization says that as word spread about how its bed could be easily cleaned and put back into use after an infestation, it sold 2,700 bed frames across the country.
