GORHAM, ME - A fire shut down Town & Country Cabinets. The Gorham, ME firm is the exclusive manufacturer of hand-made Shaker furniture for high-profile retailer Sturbridge Yankee.

Fueled by stains, coatings and the lumber inventory, firefighters battled the seemingly intractable fire for much of the day. Local media report that a passerby alerted owners of the fire, potentially saving much of the 19th century building and its machinery.

Town & Country Cabinets opened in 1974 as a builder of custom cabinets, later expanding into a full service wood products manufacturer. Along with custom-made cabinets, it began producing specialty and accent items such as occasional tables, bookcases, and mirror frames.

Sturbridge Yankee extols in a video above Town & Country Cabinets' hand crafting, but the company relies on its CNC routing capability to manufacture a large quantity and variety of wood products, "while maintaining a high standard of quality that equals hand-made craftsmanship. Its affiliation with Sturbridge Yankee began in 1987. Recently the firm branched into Murphy Beds disguised as wall cabinets or a piece of furniture. Murphy Beds are custom made, permitting with specification of wood, style, and finish.
