In recent years, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) has become a source of global environmental concern, as a growing body of scientific evidence points to the potential long-term human and environmental health dangers. This hampers recycling and creates challenges in reducing environmental impact over the office system life-cycle.

, Grand Rapids, MI: This spring, the nationâs largest manufacturer of casegoods ($2.3 billion in 2009 revenues) announced that all 17 of its active solid colors and seven woodgrain 3mm and 1mm edgebands are PVC-free on 12 of its systems furniture product lines. Steelcase has offered PVC-free edgebanding in Europe since 1995, and says it leads the office systemsâ industry with this offering for work surfaces in North America.
