The whole piece, for context

This credenza is walnut veneer. That I stripped and sanded with fine grit paper. I stained it with dark walnut danish oil. The white part at the bottom seems to resist the oil. I was very careful with sanding and I didn’t think I went through the veneer, but I’m not sure what other explanation there might be. I’d welcome suggestions on how to correct this. Thanks!
