White oak vs. post oak

Q. I never thought I would be emailing you with a question, but here it is. We use white oak quite a bit and recently have had a sawmill offer us some post oak that he says is a white oak. Is this a reasonable substitute? What is post oak?

What's a penny nail?

Q. Not an urgent question, but why are nails sometimes called by the “penny” such as a 16 penny nail. Everyone seems to have a slightly different answer, so I am asking you.

Panel Supply

Warped imported panels

Q. Here is the story. We ordered some panels from overseas. They arrived in the container and looked pretty good, but then a few days after we took them out of the container they warped quite a bit and are unusable. We just checked the moisture and it was fairly low, around 7 percent MC. What is happening and what can we do?

Tell me your wood stories

Q. Can you give me an interesting story about wood? I have to give a talk to some children and want something interesting to begin with.

Stain in yellow poplar

Q. We make a lot of wood mouldings out of yellow-poplar. We have received some yellow-poplar with gray stain on the ends of the lumber, running a foot or so up the board. What is this? Does it affect the use of this lumber for moulding or other uses?
