The California Attorney General’s Office now says that the manufacturer must place a warning label for wood dust exposure on products, or risk violating Proposition 65 if the retailers fail to notify consumers.

Industry representatives continue to debate with the State of California over the proper language needed for a wood dust warning under Prop 65.

While industry is still wrangling over California OSHA’s proposed lowering of the Permissible Exposure Limit for wood dust, from 5 mg/m3 down to 1 mg/m3, the California Department of Justice has gone ahead and developed language for a warning label on wood dust.

Written comments will be submitted this week by the Inter-Industry Wood Dust Coordinating Committee in response to the proposed lowering of the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) for wood dust in California. Cal/OSHA has proposed lowering the state’s wood dust permissible exposure limits from 5 mg/m3 total dust to a PEL of 1 mg/m3 inhalable dust.
