Are You Ready for CARB 2?

Jan. 1 marks the implementation date for Phase 2 of the California Air Resources Board’s (CARB) formaldehyde rule. For composite panel manufacturers, fabricators and distributors, this means your particleboard products must now meet the lower emission standards of 0.09 ppm, while products made of MDF must not exceed emissions levels of 0.11 ppm — about half of what was previously allowable for both types of composite panels.

Chemist sees bright future for soy wood glues

WASHINGTON -- Speaking at the 240th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society, a chemist for the USDA Forest Service described the development of new soy-based glues that use a substance in soy milk and tofu and could mean a new generation of more eco-friendly furniture, cabinets, flooring and other wood products.

Congress Passes Federal Formaldehyde Legislation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. House of Representatives yesterday passed the Formaldehyde Standards for Composite Wood Products Act, a bipartisan bill that incorporates aspects of the California formaldehyde standard. The bill cleared the Senate earlier this month and will now be sent to the President for his signature.
