Removing corbels from trestle base

My 40 year old oak table is 44x68, and chairs having angle legs, which take up space. I cannot fit 2 chairs along the sides even though it is 68”. My husband refuses to get rid of it but I want to seat 6 people without having to put in 2 16” leaves, as we don’t have space. Could I trim the corbels off where the chairs could slide over the trestle base, which would possible solve my dilemma. There is adequate height of the cross bar below the chair seat. Thanks for any advice. I have refinished several pieces, so I could easily stain the new raw edges. I just wonder if the corbels are possibly supporting the tabl.
