A.  I developed the so-called “Virginia Tech” solar kiln in 1978. There are hundreds, maybe thousands, of these throughout the world. Check the latest design publication at

In general, a solar heated kiln is about 1000 BF capacity with about 3 loads a year. If you need more lumber, especially int he wintertime, consider different kiln, such as a dehumidifier powered kiln.
