BARCELONA, SPAIN - Furnishings retailer IKEA launched bedside tables, lamps and desks with embedded smart phone, tablet, iPhone and iPad chargers that eliminates cables and the need for grommets and plug in ports.
IKEA released the news of its new charger enabled furnishings brand, Home Smart, at the Mobile World Congress, which runs through today in Barcelona, Spain. Bjorn Block, Range Manager for Lighting and Wireless Charging, at IKEA, said the wireless charging home furnishings will be available in Europe and North America in Apri 2015l, followed by a global rollout.
"Our belief is that mobile phones are vital parts to people's lives at home and their desire to stay connected, and Qi addresses an unmet need to keep devices powered," said Bjorn Block, Range Manager for Lighting and Wireless Charging, at IKEA.
IKEA adopted the Qi standard from the Wireless Power Consortium for its charging devices. Like all things electronic, there are varying platforms. IKEA's adoption of the standard for its furniture strengthens Qi's hold on the market.
Qi was established in 2008 and is used on 80 smart phone models, and is deployed in thousands of hotel rooms. "As a member of WPC, we value the access to the leading and most advanced global standard for wireless charging," Block said.
The transition to wireless charging stations was shown by several exhibitors during NeoCon 2014 in Chicago last year, including systems embedded in solid surface countertops. Furniture manufacturer and hardware supplier Leggett & Platt offers a line of systems through its Helios division for residential furniture and commercial architecural applications.
