Employees of Yorktowne Cabinetry, members of United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners Local 2837, have rejected a contract offered by the company that would have reduced their pay by more than 8 percent over the next two years.
According to TheDailyItem.com, Yorktowne is seeking a 6.3 percent pay cut this year, a 2.1 percent cut next year and stagnant wages for the following year. Additional demands by the company include a 10 percent increase in health care costs, mandatory overtime and 8-hour Saturdays. The unionâs counter offer was not considered.
A final offer will be made by the company on Monday, workers not showing up for work will be at risk of losing their jobs, said a company spokesperson. Union leaders are considering a federal lawsuit alleging unfair labor practices and bargaining in bad faith.
Founded in 1908 as Colonial Cabinets, Yorktowne Cabinetry manufactures custom and semi-custom kitchen cabinetry. Acquired by Wickes Corp. in 1973, it was later acquired by Elkay Corp., which also owns the MasterCraft, Medallion and Schuler cabinetry lines.
