VERNON, BC --

Tolko Industries Ltd. announced that its Kelowna, BC, veneer operation, closed since January 2007, will not be reopened.

The plant once employed 170 people, according to the Kelwona Capital News. Twenty-one 21 crew members were maintained at the plant until October 2009 when they were laid off.

According to the newspaper, the decision to close the veneer plant permanently was partially due to the infestation of mountain pine beetle in local forests.

Tolko continues to operate other wood product facilities.
