Tip-over recall issued on Herman Miller, Design Within Reach dressers & cabinets

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission, in conjunction with Health Canada, Herman Miller and Design Within Reach, have issued a joint recall on certain models of Nelson and Lauki cabinets and dressers due to tip-over and entrapment hazards.

According to the notice, the recalled dressers and cabinets are unstable and can tip over if not anchored to the wall, posing serious tip-over and entrapment hazards that can result in death or injuries to children.  The CPSC site notes the chests do not comply with the performance requirements of the U.S. voluntary industry standard (ASTM F2057-19).

Approximately 2,700 of these products were sold in the United States, and 120 in Canada. Nelson units were sold at the Herman Miller NY store, Design Within Reach stores nationwide, online at hermanmiller.com and dwr.com, and through wholesale dealers.  Lauki units were sold at Design Within Reach stores nationwide and online at dwr.com.  All of the products were sold from September 2010 through January 2020, with retail prices on the Nelson products ranging from $2,600 and $16,000. according to the CPSC notice.

The recall notice applies to Herman Miller's Nelson Thin Edge Chest Cabinets (TE3400E and TE3400M), Nelson Thin Edge Double Dresser (TE0204), Nelson Thin Edge Buffets (TE2167.R and TE2167.L), Nelson Thin Edge Chests (TE2100.S and TE2100.T), Nelson Thin Edge Cabinet (TE2134), Nelson Basic Cabinet Series 34x40 (BC3440.L and BC3440.M). Design Within Reach products under the recall order include Lauki 32-inch Three-Drawer Dressers (product numbers 100144158, 100144157 and 100144156),  Lauki 47-inch Six-Drawer Dressers (product numbers 10006123, 100144127, 10008841, 10001064 and 10008840), and Lauki 60-inch Six-Drawer Dressers (100144159, 100144160 and 100144161). Product numbers can be found on a label located inside an upper drawer. The products were manufactured in the United States and Spain.

Consumers are advised to immediately stop using any recalled chests or cabinets if not properly anchored to the wall, place it in an area that children cannot access, and to contact the companies.
