MINNEAPOLIS, MN -- Plans were revealed for building a tall wood office building, designed by architect Michael Green, in downtown Minneapolis, MN. If the project is approved by city agencies, it will be the tallest, modern all-wood structure in the U.S., according to published reports.
The wood building, titled T3 Office Project by the Houston, TX-based, real estate development firm Hines Interest, will be seven-stories high and 210,000 square feet. According to the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal, the name T3 stands for timber, technology and transit (the project will be located near a light rail line).
Construction materials planned for the building project include heavy timber with the exterior materials consisting of COR-TEN corrugated panels and metal planks and glass.
Green's Vancouver, Canada-based architectural firm, Michael Green Architecture, also designed the Wood Innovation and Design Center in British Columbia, the tallest wood building in North America. Green, a keynote speaker at the Tall Wood Buildings Symposium held in Chicago, Nov. 6-7, discussed that project, which recently opened, as well as the future of tall wood buildings in the U.S. More than 200 architects attended the conference, which was sponsored by WoodWorks, an initiative of the Wood Products Council.
