Peruvian Lumber Exports Up in 2007

LIMA, PERU — Wood exports from the South American country of Peru increased 14.32% in the first quarter of this year, compared with the same period in 2006, mainly due to higher sawn wood and flooring exports, according to the Peruvian Association of Exporters.

Cedrela, congona, and walnut were the sawn woods exported from Peru which experienced the biggest growth rate during the first quarter, increasing 107%, while exports of sawn mahogany fell 36.29%.

The United States, Mexico and China were the biggest importers of Peruvian wood, with exports to these destinations increasing 9.75%, 9.4% and 18.8% respectively.
