New Zealand MDF Factory Burns
NEW ZEALAND — In late September, Fletcher Building’s Laminex MDF factory in Centennial Dr caught fire, destroying 75 percent of the fiberboard plant, according to an online report published by The New Zealand Herald. It took more than 50 firefighters from surrounding communities to contain the oil-fueled blaze. Fire safety officers believe a broken hydraulic pipe leading to the presses was the likely cause of the fire. At the time of the incident, David Worley, from Fletcher Building’s laminates and panels division said that damages were being assessed and it was uncertain if the press could be repaired. Early reports estimate $50 million in damage.
