THOMASVILLE, N.C. – Laminate flooring manufacturer Unilin is expanding its Thomasville facility with the addition of a 100,000-square-foot warehouse as part of a $36 million investment. The expansion will add 50 jobs - bringing the company’s total local workforce to over 350.

Natalie Cumpton, Mohawk’s human resources manager, said the expansion represents another "exciting milestone" for the company's Thomasville plan.

“Our production demand for premium laminate flooring made in the U.S. continues to increase," she told the Triad Business Journal. "The company’s investment will create many exceptional career opportunities for people with technical skills and automation experience.”

This is the fourth time the company has expanded in nine years. In 2015, Unilin built a $25 million addition. In 2013, the company constructed a $5 million, 78,000-square-foot addition, and in 2007, the company invested $30 million to add a second production line.

Steve Googe, president and CEO of the county’s economic development commission, said that Mohawk, who owns Unilin, has already begun hiring for 50 jobs, which are all needed to boost production capabilities.

With the expansion comes a name change. The company is now known as Mohawk Laminate after it was acquired by Mohawk Industries in 2005. The change is part of a marketing strategy deployed to unify Mohawk’s many brands.

Unilin, originating in Belgium during the 1960s, first established its Thomasville operations in the early 2000s with about 70 employees.

Mohawk and its many subsidiaries manufacture hardwood, laminate, and ceramic flooring.
