Buckfield, ME — Wells Wood Turning & Finishing’s work will be showcased Easter Monday, April 10, in the largest public event held each year at the White House — the Easter Egg Roll.
Thousands of children will gather on the White House lawn to real eggs decorated for the holiday, but the event also coincides with the release of a line of commemorative line of collectible wooden eggs sold as a fund-raiser by the White House Historical Society.
Once again, the society tapped Wells Wood Turning to fill the order thousands of specially made, painted, and printed eggs. The company won’t say exactly how many eggs it’s staff of 30 turned out, but the number is believed to be in the tens of thousands.
“It’s quite a lengthy process,” Simon Varney, vice president, Wells Wood Turning & Finishing, told the Sun Journal newspaper in nearby Lewiston, Maine. “It takes several months to complete from the time we get the order to when the product ships out the door to Washington, D.C. Our employess take the bull by the horns and do a great job moving the project through the different stages in the mill.”
Each year, the design of the eggs is different, often displaying some special touches from the current occupant of the White House.
The Official 2023 White House Easter Egg set includes five vibrantly colored eggs featuring two whimsical imprints. The first imprint on the pink, orange, aqua blue, and green-colored eggs depicts the North Portico of the White House with decorated Easter eggs. One egg is a distinctive blue color that the White House calls Biden Blue. That egg features a special Easter Bunny imprint with pictures of the Bidens’ pets, Commander the dog and Willow the cat along with a friendly bunny.
Signatures of the President and First Lady are printed on the back of the four colored eggs and Commander and Willow’s paw prints are featured on the back of the Biden Blue egg.
The White House Easter Egg Roll is one of the oldest annual events in White House history. It dates back to 1878, when President Rutherford B. Hayes opened the grounds to children on Easter Monday. Among the many White House Easter Egg Roll traditions, wooden Easter eggs have become the official keepsake.
In addition to the regular size wooden eggs, there is a special larger gold egg available. The commemorative gold-painted egg features a whimsical imprint of the Easter Bunny designed by American artist Josh Mauthe.
All of the eggs are available for purchase from the White House Historical Association. Learn more at shop.whitehousehistory.org.
