HAINES, Ak. - An Alaska-based lumber business won a business development competition and was awarded $25,000.
Mud Bay Lumber was among the winners for the Path to Prosperity award, which is rewarded to companies in Southeastern Alaska for generating business. Mud Bay, a small-scale, family-operated sawmill, beat out hundreds of other businesses.
Company operator Sylvia Heinz told local news KHNS won for its responsible use of resources - operating with a zero waste goal. Heinz said the company's location, which has access to a road, is a big contributor to its success. Direct access to the state highways allows Mud Bay to supply locally.
The Path to Prosperity competition is a partnership between the spruce root community development organization and the nature conservancy. The award is co-sponsored by Southeast Conference and the Sustainable Southeast partnership, says KHNS.
