In March of 2021, a hail storm severely damaged the roof on the 15,000-square-foot building that houses Goebel & Co. Furniture. The company is still fighting the effects of that storm, and the insurance company on which it was relying.
As revealed in a St. Louis Magazine Facebook post, in 2025, more than four years later, the St. Louis-based furniture manufacturer is still battling water leaks from the still-damaged roof and fighting in federal court the insurance company that the company says has not fulfilled its obligations.
In a lawsuit filed more than three years ago against Cincinnati Insurance, Goebel told Woodworking Network in a 2023 interview that an insurance adjuster looked at the damage and after 15 minutes of looking at the roof, offered Goebel $100,000, which is not enough to repair the roof and cover losses to equipment and product.
“We were carrying a $1 million policy on the building itself, another $300,000 on the contents. So to be threatened by an adjuster to take $100,000 or you get nothing?” Goebel told the St. Louis magazine.
The company has been stymied by the lingering effects of the roof damage, Goebel told Woodworking Network in 2023. He said that every night the company has to put tarps on its equipment and every morning take off the tarps and check for water damage.
"We've been unbelievably inhibited with our production as a result, and we're down to some fraction of our manufacturing space as water is draining into our space," he said. "It is almost a daily occurrence. Even if it doesn't rain one day, there's still water that zigzags between the five to six layers that's on the roof.
St. Louis Magazine said that attempts to reach attorneys for the insurance company, and previous attempts by Woodworking Network in 2023 were also unsuccessful.
