HIGH POINT, N.C. - Herbert Schmidt, former vice president of Fulterer USA, died Friday, December 1 at the age of 68.
Deemed an icon of the hardware industry by his peers, Schmidt was instrumental in the success of Fulterer, helping produce the drawer slides the company is known for.
Schmidt was born in Germany on November 30, 1949. Moving to the U.S. in 1977, he worked at Hafele for 15 years and retired after 25 years from Fulterer as vice president. Schmidt loved to visit his home country of Germany and see his family and friends there. He also enjoyed playing golf and collecting model trains.
In his early years, he traveled the U.S. on a Hafele bus, introducing European made woodworking hardware often for the first time to cabinet and furniture makers.
Those who are left to cherish his memories are his son; Wilhelm Schmidt of High Point, his sister; Renate Bea and husband, Harold of Germany, his nieces and nephew; Sara Bea, Madlen Wilhelm and Patrick Bea.
The family will have a private service at a later date.
