SHANGHAI — Customs records back up claims that Shanghai-based DaVinci Furniture lied about some of its furniture being imported. The retailer raised a furor among consumers when it was discovered it had mislabeled China-made goods as imported from Italy.
According to a report on English.EastDay.com, Shanghai Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau authorities verified that 10 percent of the products DaVinci sold as "imported" were actually made in China.
According to English.EastDay, DaVinci transported the furniture to Shanghai's Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone before sending it to the company's warehouse in Qingpu District. Shipments were sent to Italy and the United States, among other places, before returning to China with an import certificate.
The customs bureau reported that the import tag increased the price of the furniture 10-fold.
