Albany Woodworks owner launches wood gasification business at its sawmill

ALBANY, La. - Entrepreneur Richard Woods, CEO of Albany Woodworks and Waste to Energy Systems, has always seen sustainability as an important ideal to live by. As a result, he has built not only his home around the concept but also his two businesses.

Albany Woodworks is a reclaimed lumber and building materials company that was started nearly 40 years ago.

Recycling lumber made sense to Woods for its hidden value and its low impact on the environment. He stocked his new company with reclaimed timber and used woodworking machinery, giving new life to what most people would have thrown away.

His first sustainable project using reclaimed wood was his own home. It was built with natural heating and cooling concepts. The home is raised over a gully to allow cool air to circulate and shading from the trees. The tall ceilings allowed heat to rise in the summer with lots of windows for cross ventilation. He used local labor and built the house as the funds became available.

Recently, Richard added an additional business in his quest for sustainability. Sawdust, the main byproduct of his sawmill, was going to waste and Woods saw the untapped potential. Wanting to make maximum use of this special grade of lumber, he began researching and came across the gasification process. Woods built several of his own small scale gasification systems to see if the technology could be successful.

After five years of successful R&D, Woods started Waste to Energy Systems, a green energy solutions company, featuring his own system the bioHearth downdraft gasification system. Completing the circle of sustainability, Woods is now able to convert waste to energy offering any company, green community or municipality a of environmentally friendly building materials and green energy.
