Steelcase Report Details Progress Toward 2012 Goal Corporate Sustainability

Report Highlights Packaging Advancements, PVC Substitutes

October 18, 2010 – Steelcase Inc. (NYSE:SCS), the global furniture manufacturer, released its 2010 Corporate Sustainability Report today, covering the company’s environmental achievements and benchmarks over the last year. With breakthroughs in sustainable packaging, PVC reductions and environmental education, to name a few, Steelcase continues to improve its products and operations, and to meet goals that coincide with its 100-year anniversary in 2012.

Through the telling of personal stories, the report describes the company’s efforts to create enduring value for people, the planet and the global economy. Actions taken in areas as diverse as manufacturing, materials, training -- in its local communities and alongside its customers -- reveal the company’s aspiration to be a catalyst for change in its industry and around the world.

“There is no standing still in regards to sustainability,” said Jim Hackett, President and CEO, Steelcase, Inc. “There must be movement and progress in order to build a strong future for the planet, its institutions and its people. This belief is deeply embedded in Steelcase’s DNA, and continues to focus and inspire us in today’s challenging times.”

A set of metrics in the report quantifies the company’s progress in a number of specific, key areas. For instance, since 2001 – when Steelcase pledged to reduce its global environmental footprint by 25 percent – the company has reduced its waste by 63 percent and greenhouse gas emissions by 59 percent. Steelcase has also reduced its water consumption by 71 percent since 2001, a seven percent increase from last year, and has reduced VOC emissions by 94 percent since 2001.
